In a near-future setting, a bookstore employee named Joe witnesses the sudden murder of his partner, Ash, by an unknown assailant. While grieving the loss, Joe discovers evidence that suggests his perception of the world is a fabrication. His search for the truth leads him to a corporation developing digital simulation technology, causing him to suspect that his entire existence is part of a programmed illusion. He eventually realizes that Ash may still exist in another state, prompting him to risk his own reality to find her.
