City of Angels

Seth is an angel who moves unseen through Los Angeles, present at moments of crisis and death but unable to taste, feel pain or fall in love. His existence changes when he encounters Maggie Rice, a heart surgeon left shaken after losing a patient on the operating table. Although she cannot normally perceive him, the two begin to connect, and Seth finds himself drawn to her determination and her grief. The attraction grows into a love that cuts across the boundary between his immortal nature and her human life, forcing him to weigh what he would give up to be with her.

Brad Silberling directed the film, his second feature after Casper (1995) and the one released between it and Moonlight Mile (2002). The screenplay is credited to Wim Wenders, Richard Reitinger and Dana Stevens. Nicolas Cage plays Seth and Meg Ryan plays Maggie, with Dennis Franz, Andre Braugher and Colm Feore in supporting roles.

The film was released in April 1998 and runs 114 minutes. Made for a budget of 55 million dollars, it took in 199 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7/10 from around 134,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.8/10 from roughly 2,454 votes. The critics' rating stands at 6.3/10 from 58 reviews, placing it slightly below the audience scores.
