Josh Baker is a New York comic book artist who meets a young woman named Cheryl and quickly becomes smitten with her. When she collapses in the street during a diabetic episode, an ambulance crew takes her away, but Josh is not allowed to ride along. He later visits the hospital where she was supposedly taken and learns she never arrived there, and that no ambulance matching the description exists in the fleet. The police dismiss his account, leaving Josh to investigate alone. His search draws him toward a series of suspicious deaths and a doctor who preys on young diabetics, a truth far worse than what he first imagined.
Larry Cohen wrote and directed the film, the seventh of the features he directed and the one that followed Wicked Stepmother in 1989. Eric Roberts plays Josh, with James Earl Jones as Lt. Spencer, Janine Turner as Cheryl, Megan Gallagher, Richard Bright and Eric Braeden rounding out the main cast. Produced by Moctesuma Esparza and Robert Katz for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Epic Productions, the film had a budget of about four million dollars and runs 96 minutes, mixing action, comedy and thriller elements.
Released in March 1990, it holds a rating of 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 126 votes, which suggests a modest response from viewers rather than a widely celebrated one.
