Short description
Based on the real case of the Guildford Four, In the Name of the Father follows Gerry Conlon, a young Belfast petty criminal whose life is upended when he is arrested in London for an IRA bombing he had nothing to do with. Pressured into signing a false confession, he is imprisoned along with his friends and several relatives, including his father Giuseppe, whose quiet resilience sustains Gerry through years behind bars. With the help of a determined solicitor, Gareth Peirce, he sets out to clear his name and expose the miscarriage of justice.
Jim Sheridan directed and produced, and wrote the screenplay with Terry George; it was his third feature, arriving between The Field and The Boxer. Daniel Day-Lewis plays Gerry, with Pete Postlethwaite as Giuseppe, Emma Thompson as Peirce, and John Lynch, Corin Redgrave and Beatie Edney in supporting roles. Made for about 13 million dollars, it returned roughly 66 million worldwide.
