Better Man
Short description
Better Man traces the life of British pop singer Robbie Williams, from his childhood in northern England through his years as the youngest member of the boyband Take That and on to his record-breaking solo career. The film follows his rise to global fame and the personal struggles that came with it, including self-doubt and addiction, as he confronts how he sees himself. It is presented from Williams's own perspective.
The film is directed by Michael Gracey, his second feature after The Greatest Showman, from a screenplay he wrote with Simon Gleeson and Oliver Cole. Jonno Davies plays Robbie Williams, with Robbie Williams providing the character's voice, and Steve Pemberton, Alison Steadman, Kate Mulvany and Frazer Hadfield among the cast. A large production spanning several countries, it cost about 110 million dollars and returned roughly 23 million at the worldwide box office.
Audiences have received it favourably, with a rating of 7.5 from around 44,000 votes on IMDb and 7.6 from about 930 votes on TMDB. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 227 reviews places it close to those audience scores, suggesting broadly similar levels of approval.
What's left behind the scenes
- It took four nights to film the dance on Regent Street in London, and it took a year and a half to obtain permission to film. The filming location is owned by the royal family, and Elizabeth II passed away two days before the planned start of filming. The dance was only filmed five months later.
- The film's poster is a reference to the cover of Robbie Williams' first solo album, 'Life thru a Lens' from 1997.
- The film is based on recordings of numerous interviews that Michael Gracey took with Robbie Williams in Williams' recording studio in Los Angeles over a year and a half. A significant portion of the text that Williams reads in the film is taken from these interviews.
