Peter Carter, his wife Sally and their young daughter Jean settle in a small Canadian town, where Peter has taken a job as school principal. Their new life is disrupted when Jean and a friend describe an encounter with Clarence Olderberry, an elderly man from one of the town's oldest and most influential families, who offered them sweets for dancing naked in front of him. Peter and Sally decide to report the matter, but the family soon faces hostility and pressure from people unwilling to see the respected Olderberry accused. The case reaches court, where the children's testimony becomes the centre of the dispute.
Cyril Frankel directed this British drama, his first credited feature, with a screenplay by John Hunter and production by Anthony Hinds for Hammer Film Productions. Patrick Allen and Gwen Watford play the parents, Janina Faye plays Jean, and Felix Aylmer plays Olderberry, with Niall MacGinnis and Michael Gwynn as the opposing lawyers. The film runs eighty-one minutes and mixes drama, mystery and thriller elements.
Released in 1960, the film holds a rating of 7.4 from roughly 2,300 votes on IMDb and 7.3 from a much smaller number of votes on TMDB, a level of agreement that suggests a favourable response from those who have seen it. Frankel's next credited film as director followed two decades later.
