Set in the year 2898 AD, roughly six thousand years after the Kurukshetra war, the film depicts a ruined world divided between a privileged elite and those left outside. A city known as the Complex holds most of the remaining resources, while the surrounding wastelands are plagued by scarcity and desperation. An immortal warrior from the age of the Mahabharata, Ashwatthama, seeks redemption by protecting a woman, Sumathi, whose unborn child is the focus of an ancient prophecy and of the Complex's pursuit. Against him stands Bhairava, a self-interested bounty hunter who sees capturing her as his way out of a dangerous life. The Complex's commander, Manas, works toward a formula meant to secure the ruler's immortality.
Nag Ashwin wrote and directed the film, which is his fourth feature as director and his first in this scale of science fiction. Amitabh Bachchan plays Ashwatthama, with Prabhas as Bhairava, Deepika Padukone as Sumathi and Kamal Haasan as Supreme Yaskin; Saswata Chatterjee and Shobana also appear. Produced by Vyjayanthi Movies and Annapurna Studios, it was made for about 75 million US dollars and returned around 141 million worldwide, a substantial result for an Indian production of this kind.
On IMDb the film holds 7 out of 10 from roughly 75,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from a much smaller number of ratings. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 38 reviews places it close to the audience score on IMDb. The film runs 176 minutes.
