Peter is a New York lawyer whose professional success is matched by a settled home life with his partner Beth and their baby. That balance is disrupted when his ex-wife Kate turns up worried about Nicholas, the teenage son she and Peter share. Nicholas has stopped attending school, has grown withdrawn and angry, and asks to move in with his father. Peter takes him in and tries to help, while Kate remains involved, but the boy's distress weighs heavily on the household.
Florian Zeller directed and co-wrote the film with Christopher Hampton, following his debut feature The Father in 2020. Hugh Jackman plays Peter, with Zen McGrath as Nicholas, Vanessa Kirby as Beth, Laura Dern as Kate, and Anthony Hopkins in the cast. The film runs 123 minutes and was made across Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and France, with a worldwide box office of around 4 million dollars.
Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 20,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of about 600. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 186 reviews places it clearly below the audience scores. Zeller's next film was Bunker, released in 2026.
