TÁR follows Lydia Tár, a renowned conductor and composer who has become the first woman to lead a major German orchestra. As she prepares to record Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony, a high point in an already distinguished career, pressures in her professional and private life begin to collide, and the consequences of her past conduct start to surface. The film is a fictional portrait of a celebrated artist whose authority and position are increasingly called into question.

Todd Field wrote and directed the film, his third feature after In the Bedroom and Little Children, and also produced it with Scott Lambert and Alexandra Milchan. Cate Blanchett plays the title role, with Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, Sophie Kauer, Julian Glover and Mark Strong among the supporting cast. Made on a budget of about 35 million dollars, it earned roughly 29 million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds 7.4 out of 10 from around 109,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 from a much smaller base of 1,604. A critics' rating of 8.4 from 361 reviews places it noticeably above both audience scores, suggesting stronger approval from reviewers than from general viewers.
