Short description

Becky del Páramo, a singer who left Madrid years earlier, returns to the city to perform and to reconnect with Rebeca, the daughter she abandoned. Rebeca has grown up in her mother's shadow and is now married to Manuel, a television executive who was once involved with Becky. The reunion is uneasy, and the marriage is worse; Manuel tries to revive his old relationship with Becky, who turns him down. Not long afterward, Manuel is found dead, and mother and daughter both fall under suspicion. The investigation is led by a judge whose private life connects him to the case in ways that complicate it further.

Pedro Almodóvar wrote and directed the film, the fifth of the twenty-two features he has directed, following Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! and preceding Kika. Victoria Abril plays Rebeca and Marisa Paredes plays Becky, with Miguel Bosé as the judge, among a credited cast of forty-four and a crew of forty-three. The production was a Spanish, Portuguese and French co-production involving El Deseo.

The film mixes comedy, crime and drama, and its worldwide box office came to about two million dollars. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from roughly nineteen thousand votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from under five hundred votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.3 out of 10 from eighteen reviews, so audiences have rated it somewhat more warmly than critics have.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The pink Chanel dress sometimes worn by Rebecca, played by Victoria Abril (birth name – Victoria Madrid Rojas), is the same one worn by Antonia San Juan's character in Pedro Almodóvar's melodrama 'All About My Mother' (1999).
  • Pedro Almodóvar often uses a scene or character from a previous film in his next project. In this case, Victoria Abril will star as a journalist in the film 'Kika' (1993).
  • Cristina Marcos was on screen for no more than 5 minutes, but she was nominated for a Goya – Spain's national film award presented by the Spanish Academy of Cinematic Arts and Sciences – in the category of 'Best Supporting Actress'.
