Short description

A nutty inventor, his frustrated wife, a philosopher cousin, his much younger fiancée, a randy doctor, and a free-thinking nurse spend a summer weekend in and around a stunning - and possibly magical - country house.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The music of Felix Mendelssohn featured in this film was also used in the movie 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.
  • Woody Allen wrote the role of Ariel specifically for Diane Keaton, but she was unable to accept it because she was busy promoting her film 'Reds' (1981) and preparing for Alan Parker's film ' Shoot the Moon' (1981).
  • For the first time, Woody Allen appeared in one of his own films as part of an ensemble cast. Prior to this, he had either played the lead role or did not act at all.
  • This was the first time Mia Farrow appeared in a Woody Allen film.
  • Woody Allen wrote the screenplay for this film in two weeks.
  • This was the first Woody Allen film released in collaboration with Orion Pictures, whose executives had previously worked at United Artists and had also produced Allen's films. Zelig (1983) was intended to be Allen's first film with Orion Pictures, but its release was delayed due to technical problems. The company insisted on releasing a film sooner, and Allen had to quickly write a script for a sex comedy.
  • During filming, José Ferrer became the target of a joke. Dustin Hoffman, in makeup while filming the role of Dorothy Michaels in Tootsie (1982), visited their set and flirted with Ferrer; Ferrer politely declined his advances, completely unaware that Hoffman was actually a man.
  • As of 2012, this is the only Woody Allen film to be nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award (an anti-award recognizing the worst acting, screenplay, direction, song, and film of the year).
  • Jose Ferrer sings "The Lord's Prayer," which was written by Albert Hay Malotte only in 1935, whereas the events of the film take place much earlier.
  • At the beginning of the film, as a deer runs through the forest, a crew member can be seen sitting by a tree.
  • The film is partially based on the comedy 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' (1955), which also served as the inspiration for Stephen Sondheim's musical 'A Little Night Music'.
