From Up on Poppy Hill is set in Yokohama in 1963, as Japan rebuilds after the Second World War and prepares to host the Tokyo Olympics. Umi Matsuzaki, a high school student, runs a boarding house near the sea while her mother is away. Every morning she raises signal flags in memory of her father, a ship's captain lost at sea years earlier. When a school newspaper article about this daily ritual appears, she meets Shun Kazama, a fellow student active in the school's clubs, and the two grow close while joining classmates trying to save their ageing clubhouse from demolition. A secret from their families' past then threatens their relationship.
This animated drama was directed by Goro Miyazaki, the second of three features he has directed, following Tales from Earthsea and preceding Earwig and the Witch.
