The Red Baron follows Manfred von Richthofen, the celebrated German fighter pilot of the First World War. He and his fellow airmen treat aerial combat as a sporting and technical challenge governed by a code of honour, which keeps the reality of the fighting below at a distance. As his tally of victories grows, so does his fame, and the film shows how that image is put to use for propaganda. His relationship with Käthe, a nurse, changes how he sees the war and his own part in it, leaving him torn between his growing distaste for the conflict and his duty to the men who fly with him. Among those comrades are Werner Voss and his brother Lothar.
Nikolai Müllerschön directed and wrote the screenplay, with Roland Pellegrino and Dan Maag among the producers. Matthias Schweighöfer plays Richthofen, and the cast includes Til Schweiger, Lena Headey, Joseph Fiennes, Volker Bruch and Julie Engelbrecht. Made for a budget of 18 million USD, the film took about 3 million USD at the worldwide box office.
On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from around 14,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 out of 10 from roughly 287 votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 23 reviews places it well below the audience scores.
