In the 1990s, the relationship between Gracie and Joe, a woman in her mid-thirties and a teenager, became a national tabloid scandal. More than two decades later, the two are married and raising children in a comfortable suburban life. Their settled existence is disturbed when Elizabeth, a well-known actress, arrives to spend time with the family. She is preparing to play Gracie in a film about the affair, and her efforts to understand the woman she will portray soon put pressure on the household.

Todd Haynes directed, working from a screenplay by Samy Burch. The film sits late in a career that began with Poison in 1991 and includes Safe, Far from Heaven, Carol and Dark Waters, among others. Natalie Portman plays Elizabeth and also produced alongside Christine Vachon and Will Ferrell. Julianne Moore, a frequent Haynes collaborator, plays Gracie, with Charles Melton as Joe and Cory Michael Smith as Georgie.

On IMDb, the film holds a 6.7 rating from roughly 73,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.6 from about 1,086 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 331 reviews is noticeably higher than those audience scores. Made for a reported 20 million dollars, it returned about 5 million worldwide.
