Set in 1955, this historical drama follows the acclaimed playwright and director Marcel Pagnol. Tasked with writing a column about his youth for a magazine, the sixty-year-old artist struggles with failing memory and recent professional disappointments. His creative crisis shifts when he is visited by a magical manifestation of his younger self. Together, the two versions of the man revisit Pagnol's life, recalling his early years in Provence, his first loves, and his contributions to the evolution of sound cinema.
The film was directed and written by Sylvain Chomet, following his previous works The Triplets of Belleville, Paris Je T'aime, The Illusionist, and Attila Marcel. The voice cast features Laurent Lafitte as the adult Pagnol, alongside Géraldine Pailhas, Thierry Garcia, Olivia Gotanègre, Sophie Maréchal, and Vincent Fernandel.
Produced as a collaboration between France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the United States, the project had a budget of 15 million USD but earned 1 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception is generally positive, with a rating of 6.8/10 on IMDb from 386 votes and 7.2/10 on TMDB from 21 votes. These figures align with the reception from film critics, who gave the movie a rating of 6.8/10 across 24 reviews.
