Hinterland

Set in Vienna in 1920, this historical thriller follows Peter Perg, a veteran returning from captivity after the Great War. He finds his home city transformed following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, struggling with unemployment and political instability. When a series of brutal murders targeting former soldiers begins, Perg realizes the victims are his old comrades. To find the killer, he teams up with forensic doctor Theresa Körner, a woman from his past, and police officer Paul Severin. Their investigation leads them through the city's underworld and reveals corruption within the police force.

The film was directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, who also co-wrote the screenplay. It is the seventh feature in his career, following Cold Hell and Patient Zero, and preceding Icefall. The cast features Murathan Muslu as Perg, Liv Lisa Fries as Körner, and Max von der Groeben as Severin. The production was a collaboration between companies from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the United States.

Audience reception has been moderate, with the film holding a 6.2 rating on IMDb from 1,900 votes and a 6.2 rating on TMDB from 89 votes. Film critics provided a more positive assessment, giving the movie a rating of 7.5 based on 17 reviews.
