Short description

V/H/S is a 2012 American horror anthology in which a group of small-time criminals is hired by an unknown client to break into an isolated, run-down house and retrieve a single rare videotape. What they find instead is a dead man surrounded by televisions and stacks of cassettes. To identify the right tape, they work through the collection, and each recording pulls them into a different and increasingly disturbing piece of found footage, while something threatening stirs around them in the house.

The film is a collaborative anthology, with segments directed by Joe Swanberg, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Glenn McQuaid, Ti West, Adam Wingard, David Bruckner, Tyler Gillett, Justin Martinez and Chad Villella, several of whom also appear in the framing story. The screenplay is credited to Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Simon Barrett and Glenn McQuaid, and the cast includes Calvin Lee Reeder, Lane Hughes, Kentucker Audley, Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett among thirty-six credited performers. For Ti West it was the fourth of thirteen features he has directed, following The House of the Devil and preceding The Innkeepers.

Produced by Bloody Disgusting, The Collective and 8383 Productions, the film had a worldwide box office of about 2 million dollars. Critical and audience responses landed in similar territory: critics gave it 5.7 out of 10 across 106 reviews, while it holds 5.8 on IMDb from around 75,000 votes and 6.1 on TMDB from roughly 1,776 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The brick mansion broken into by burglars is the same one featured in the web series "Marble Hornets" (2009-2014), which popularized Slender Man.
