Set during the Second Sino-Japanese War, Hidden Blade follows underground operatives who put their lives at risk to gather intelligence and protect their country. After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, the Wang Jingwei regime declares war on Britain and the United States, shifting the balance of the conflict and opening the Pacific theater. As the situation changes, members of the Communist underground work to undermine relations between the collaborationist government and the Japanese occupiers. The film moves between action, drama, history and mystery, focusing on the dangerous, hidden work of agents operating under cover.
Cheng Er directed and wrote the screenplay, following his 2016 film The Wasted Times. It is the second feature in his directing career. The cast is led by Tony Leung Chiu-wai as Mr. He, Wang Yibo as Mr. Ye, Zhou Xun as Ms. Chen, Wang Chuanjun as Captain Wang, Huang Lei as Mr. Zhang and Dong Chengpeng as Mr. Tang. Zhao Hai-Cheng and Yu Dong served as producers, with Bona Film Group, Alibaba Pictures Group, China Film Group and Just Creative Studio behind the production, a Chinese and American co-production.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from roughly 8,600 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.3 from around 59 votes. A critics' rating of 6.3 from 18 reviews places it in line with the audience scores, suggesting a broadly similar, moderate response across viewers and reviewers.
