Set in 1930s India, India Song centres on Anne-Marie Stretter, the wife of the French ambassador in Calcutta. Living in the enclosed world of the embassy, she drifts through an existence marked by boredom and takes a number of lovers, a situation her husband is aware of but chooses to overlook. Among the guests at a reception is the French vice-consul of Lahore, sent to Calcutta in disgrace, who publicly declares his love for her in front of the assembled company. The following day, Anne-Marie has disappeared.
Marguerite Duras directed and wrote the screenplay, working from her own material, with Simon Damiani and André Valio-Cavaglione producing. Delphine Seyrig plays Anne-Marie Stretter, and Michael Lonsdale appears as the vice-consul of Lahore. The cast also includes Mathieu Carrière, Claude Mann, Vernon Dobtcheff and Didier Flamand, among 21 credited performers. The film runs 115 minutes and was released in June 1975.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1/10 from around 2,900 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.3/10 from 92 votes, indicating a modest but persistent level of interest rather than broad popularity.
