Short description
Set during the Napoleonic Wars, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World follows Captain Jack Aubrey of the British Royal Navy, whose ship is surprised and badly damaged by a larger, more heavily armed French vessel. Rather than return home, Aubrey chooses to pursue the enemy across two oceans, a decision that weighs his duty and his desire for victory against the safety of the crew he commands, among them the ship's surgeon and his closest friend. The chase carries the damaged ship and its exhausted men to distant waters, testing both the captain's judgment and the loyalty of those who serve under him.
Peter Weir directed and co-wrote the film with John Collee, and produced it with Duncan Henderson and Samuel Goldwyn Jr. It is the twelfth of the thirteen features Weir has directed, arriving between The Truman Show and The Way Back. Russell Crowe plays Aubrey, with Paul Bettany as Dr. Stephen Maturin, alongside James D'Arcy, Robert Pugh, David Threlfall and Lee Ingleby in supporting roles. The production credits list 26 cast members and 236 crew.
Released in November 2003, the film cost about 150 million dollars and took roughly 210 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.5/10 from around 254,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2/10 from about 3,675 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9/10 from 227 reviews places it above both audience scores.

- Filming took around 100 days at the Baja Studios in Mexico, and only 10 days at sea.
- Ralph Fiennes was considered for the role of Doctor Maturin.
- According to Aubrey’s letter to his beloved, the film’s action takes place in 1805.
- To participate in this project, Russell Crowe temporarily turned down a role in "Knockdown." He eventually returned to the project, but the director had already been replaced.
