Short description
Joe Young is a devout Mormon living in Los Angeles, where his attempts to spread his faith meet with little success. When he finds himself on the set of a pornographic film, his martial arts skills catch the eye of producer Maxxx Orbison, who offers him the lead role as the superhero Captain Orgazmo, a character who fights crime with a weapon built by his new friend Ben. Joe takes the part to raise money for his wedding, expecting nothing to come of it, but the film becomes a hit and his life grows complicated, particularly once his fiancée, Lisa, learns what he has been doing.
The comedy was directed by Trey Parker, who wrote it with Matt Stone. It was the first feature Parker directed, arriving before South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Parker and Stone also produced alongside Fran Rubel Kuzui. Parker stars as Joe and the superhero, with Dian Bachar as Ben, Matt Stone as Dave the Lighting Guy, Michael Dean Jacobs as Maxxx Orbison, Robyn Lynne Raab as Lisa and Masao Maki as a sushi bar owner. The production, spanning the United States and Japan, worked from a budget of about one million dollars.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.1 from around 39,000 votes, matching the 6.1 from roughly 500 votes on TMDB. A critics' rating stands at 5 out of 10 from 30 reviews, slightly below what general audiences report.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the video store scene, when Lisa learns that Joe is in porn films, the first shot shows a shelf of films. These are all films from Troma Studios.
- Trey Parker and Matt Stone initially considered making a musical, like their previous work "Cannibal! The Musical" from 1993, however, finding investors to film a story about Orgazmo proved not so difficult, so they had to abandon the idea of filming it as a musical.

- Screenwriters Trey Parker and Matt Stone originally wanted to cast a stripper with very ample curves, known as “Eartha Quake,” but it turned out she had recently lost weight, and they had to find someone else for the role.
