Short description
The ABCs of Death is a horror anthology inspired by children's alphabet books. The film consists of 26 segments, each assigned a letter of the alphabet from A to Z. For each chapter, a different director chose a word starting with their assigned letter to create a story centered on death and various ways of dying.
The production involved contributors from ten countries, including Japan, France, and the United States. It features a large assembly of directors, including Adam Wingard, Ben Wheatley, and Ti West, for whom this was the sixth of 13 films. Other directors include Noboru Iguchi, Xavier Gens, and Banjong Pisanthanakun. The screenplay was written by Jake West, Noboru Iguchi, and Simon Barrett, with production handled by MAGNET, Drafthouse Films, Timpson Films, and Magnet Pictures. The credited cast includes 59 performers, such as Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Erik Audé, and Kyra Zagorsky.
Released in 2013, the film has received mixed to positive feedback from viewers. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 6.4/10 based on 211 votes, while its rating on TMDB is lower at 4.9/10 from 642 votes. Film critics gave the movie a rating of 4.9/10 from 68 reviews, which aligns with the audience score on TMDB but is lower than the rating on IMDb.
What's left behind the scenes
- Lee Hardcastle, the director and animator of the short film 'T stands for Toilet', later filmed a sequel—a short titled 'Ghost Burger'. 'T stands for Toilet' tells the story of a boy who survived after a toilet fell on him. Thus, 'T stands for Toilet' became the only short film in which death is not depicted.
- In January 2015, a guilty verdict was delivered against Sheila Kearns, a teacher who showed this film to her students during a Spanish lesson.
- Each of the 26 short films begins with the camera showing something red—for example, a red tray in the film for 'A', a red circle on a headband in the film for 'S', and so on.
