Short description
Peter Pan has grown up. Now a middle-aged corporate lawyer named Peter Banning, he has left Neverland and his childhood far behind, married Wendy's granddaughter Moira and started a family. Work consumes him, straining his marriage and his relationship with his children. When his old enemy Captain Hook abducts the two of them and takes them to Neverland, Peter must follow, and with Tinkerbell's help he has to rediscover the boy he once was in order to face the pirate again.
Steven Spielberg directed the film, working from a screenplay by James V. Hart and Malia Scotch Marmo, with Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Gerald R. Molen producing. It was the eighteenth film Spielberg had directed, arriving between Always and Schindler's List. Robin Williams plays Peter Banning, Dustin Hoffman plays Captain Hook, Julia Roberts plays Tinkerbell, and Bob Hoskins, Maggie Smith and Caroline Goodall appear among the large credited cast.
The production carried a budget of 70 million dollars and took 301 million dollars worldwide, a strong commercial result. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from roughly 290,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.8, from a much smaller voter base. A critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 138 reviews places it below the audience scores. The film runs 142 minutes.

- When the family flies to London, Dustin Hoffman voices the pilot, and his voice also portrays Captain Hook.
- Steven Spielberg admitted that he was disappointed with the resulting film. He struggled so much with the unruly young actors that he later stated, not entirely in jest, that he wasn't sure he'd ever want to have children again. Regardless, after the death of Robin Williams (1951-2014), Spielberg said he was glad he made the film and had met and befriended Williams.
- The kissing couple who began to fly after being sprinkled with pixie dust is George Lucas and Carrie Fisher (1956-2016).
- Maggie Smith, who played 92-year-old Wendy's grandmother, was 56 years old at the time of filming.
- When Maggie Smith, playing Wendy’s grandmother, tells the children about Peter Pan, the actress holds in her hand one of the original editions of J.M. Barrie’s fairy tale (1860-1937). Judging by the cover, this is the first edition of the book, published in 1911.
- John Voight, with whom Dustin Hoffman had worked before, asked Hoffman if he could bring James Haven’s and Angelina Jolie’s children to the set. Hoffman didn’t object and even stayed in his Captain Hook costume for the visitors. Jolie was 16 at the time, and she seemed to Hoffman “tall, slender and with braces.” Jolie told him then that she also wanted to become an actress. Hoffman told his wife that evening that Jolie “doesn’t understand how difficult it is to be an actress.”
- One of the screenwriters, James V. Hart, was inspired to work on this project after a conversation with his son Jake, who once asked him what would happen if Peter Pan grew up.
- Julia Roberts was nicknamed “Tinker Bell” because it was not easy to communicate with her, as she worked mostly alone in front of a green screen.
- In the scene where Peter Pan passes his sword to one of the boys, only Robin Williams and Steven Spielberg knew which boy would receive it, so the boys’ emotions were genuine, not acted.
- The film is a loose sequel to J.M. Barrie's fairy tale "Peter and Wendy".
