Antonia's Line

Antonia's Line follows a woman who returns to her Dutch home village with her daughter shortly after the Second World War, taking up a farm her late mother left her. There she settles into a community of strong-willed and eccentric neighbours, among them a friend known as Crooked Finger and a would-be suitor named Bas. Across the decades that follow, the household grows into an extended family of independent women spanning several generations, and their unorthodox ways gradually wear down the suspicion of the surrounding village.

Marleen Gorris directed and wrote the film. It was her second feature, arriving between Broken Mirrors in 1984 and Carolina in 2003. Willeke van Ammelrooy plays Antonia, Els Dottermans plays her daughter Danielle, and the cast also includes Dora van der Groen, Veerle van Overloop, Carolien Spoor and Esther Vriesendorp, with 23 performers credited in all. It runs 102 minutes.

The film took about 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from roughly 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9 from about 152 votes, so the two audiences differ somewhat in how warmly they received it.
