Short description

Following a global environmental collapse that left Earth uninhabitable, a wealthy family and their staff live in a luxurious underground bunker. For decades, the parents and their son have relied on strict daily rituals to maintain a sense of normalcy and hope in isolation. This fragile stability is disrupted when a young female stranger suddenly appears, challenging the family's secluded existence and their perception of the world outside.

Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, the film follows his previous works, The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence. The movie features a cast including Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, George MacKay, and Moses Ingram, with additional roles played by Bronagh Gallagher and Tim McInnerny. Produced by a collaboration of companies from Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, and Sweden, the production involved a credited crew of 74 people.

The film received a mixed reception from audiences. It holds a rating of 5.4/10 on IMDb based on 3,200 votes, while on TMDB it has a slightly lower score of 5.1/10 from 85 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director, screenwriter, and producer Joshua Oppenheimer claimed that his film is an attempt to answer whether people can reach a state where the guilt is too great to recover from the past.
  • Among the masterpieces on the wall, one can spot John Singer Sargent's painting 'Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose.' In 1897, Sargent painted a full-length portrait of Tilda Swinton's great-great-grandmother (Tilda Swinton plays the mother here). Sketches made by Sargent's own hand have been preserved at the Swinton family estate.
