Blitz

Blitz is set in London during the Second World War. Nine-year-old George lives in the city with his mother, Rita, until the German bombing campaign makes the capital too dangerous for children. Rita sends her son away to the countryside, expecting him to be safer there. George has other ideas. Unwilling to be separated from his family, he leaves the evacuation and sets out to make his own way back to London. What follows is a long and difficult journey through a country at war, while Rita, left behind, tries to find out what has happened to him.

Steve McQueen directs and wrote the screenplay, working from a story about a child caught between a mother's attempt to protect him and his refusal to accept that protection. It is his sixth feature, arriving after Hunger, Shame, 12 Years a Slave, Widows and the documentary Occupied City. Elliott Heffernan plays George, with Saoirse Ronan as Rita. The cast also includes Benjamin Clementine, Paul Weller, Stephen Graham and Harris Dickinson, among a large ensemble of 97 credited performers. Tim Bevan, McQueen and Yariv Milchan are credited as producers, and the production was handled by New Regency Pictures, Working Title Films, Apple Studios and Lammas Park.
