A Chinese Ghost Story II continues the story of Ling Choi-san, a timid tax collector who is mistaken for a wanted criminal and thrown into prison. He escapes with the help of a Taoist monk named Autumn, and the two take shelter in a temple that turns out to be haunted. Ling then falls in with a group of outlaws, among them a young woman who looks exactly like the ghost he once loved. Their paths bring them into conflict with a powerful and sinister figure, and Ling, Autumn and their new companions must join forces against a supernatural threat.
The film is a Hong Kong production from Film Workshop, produced by Tsui Hark and directed by Tony Ching Siu-Tung. It is the third of the thirteen features he directed in the order recorded here, arriving after Swordsman and before A Chinese Ghost Story III. The screenplay is by Yiu-Ming Leung, Lau Tai-Muk and Jason Lam Kee-To. Leslie Cheung returns as Ling Choi-san, with Joey Wong, Jacky Cheung, Wu Ma, Waise Lee Chi-Hung and Michelle Reis rounding out the cast.
Released in July 1990, the sequel mixes action, comedy and fantasy across its 102-minute running time. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from roughly 4,500 votes, and on TMDB it also has a 6.8 from about 146 votes, indicating a modest but consistent response from audiences across both platforms.
