Short description
Faith Corvatch, a schoolteacher, has believed since childhood that her destined partner is a man named Damon Bradley, a name she first heard during a fortune-telling session as a girl. Days before her wedding to a podiatrist named Dwayne, a phone call from one of his former classmates, who introduces himself as Damon Bradley and mentions he is heading to Venice, sends her racing to Italy in hopes of meeting him. Her sister-in-law and closest friend, Kate, who has just separated from Faith's brother Larry, comes along.
Norman Jewison directed the film, the fifteenth of the nineteen features in his directing career, following In Country and preceding Bogus. Marisa Tomei plays Faith, with Robert Downey Jr. as Peter Wright, Bonnie Hunt as Kate, Joaquim de Almeida as Giovanni, Fisher Stevens as Larry and Billy Zane as the false Damon Bradley. Diane Drake wrote the screenplay, and Charles Mulvehill, Cary Woods and Jewison produced the film for TriStar Pictures and Yorktown Productions. It runs 109 minutes and mixes comedy with romance across its Italian and American settings.
The film took about 20 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 29,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.7 from around 584 votes, and a critics' rating of 5.6 from 34 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Robert Downey Jr. and Marisa Tomei (who played Peter Wright and Faith Corvo, respectively) recreated a scene from William Wyler's melodrama "Roman Holiday" (1953) starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn near an ancient marble slab called the "Mouth of Truth." Filming on location was impossible due to a nearby terrorist attack, so the filmmakers had to make the landmark a prop.
- Initially, Bridget Fonda was considered for the role of the main character.
