Short description
Thomas Crown is a wealthy Boston businessman who has grown tired of his comfortable life and decides to plan a bold bank robbery. He assembles a crew, carries out the heist and believes he has gotten away with it cleanly. His confidence is tested when Vicki Anderson, an insurance investigator, takes on the case. Convinced that Crown is behind the robbery, she watches him closely and gets close to him personally, setting up a contest of wits between the two.
The film is directed by Norman Jewison, the fifth of nineteen features he made, arriving between In the Heat of the Night and Fiddler on the Roof. Alan Trustman wrote the screenplay, and Hal Ashby and Jewison produced. Steve McQueen plays Thomas Crown opposite Faye Dunaway as Vicki Anderson, with Paul Burke, Jack Weston, Biff McGuire and Addison Powell among the credited cast of twenty-six.
Released in June 1968, the crime drama runs 102 minutes. Made for about four million dollars, it took roughly fourteen million worldwide, a solid return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from around 32,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.8 from just over 600 votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 from forty reviews places it close to the audience scores on both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- The role of Thomas Crown was initially offered to actor Sean Connery, who later called refusing the role one of his greatest mistakes.
- The idea for the film came to screenwriter Alan Trustman while working at a bank, and in his free time, he amused himself by thinking about how the bank could be robbed.
- According to director Norman Jewison, the bank robbery was filmed at a National Shawmut Bank branch, and only the bank's management and security guards knew that a feature film was being shot. Customers were unaware, as the filming was done with a hidden camera. Of course, customers and passersby outside on the sidewalk suspected something was happening, but none of them intervened.
- Steve McQueen (1930-1980) performed all the stunts himself, including playing polo and racing a buggy at high speed along the Massachusetts coastline.
- The one-minute scene of the two main characters kissing was filmed over several days, totaling 8 hours.
- The filmmakers turned to the FBI for assistance with filming and permission to shoot at FBI headquarters in Boston, but were denied. The FBI decided that the film's script portrayed the agency in a foolish light and depicted it as incompetent.
