Set in a Yorkshire parsonage in the nineteenth century, The Bronte Sisters follows Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë as they grow up under the stern eye of their widowed father, an Anglican clergyman, alongside their brother Branwell. The siblings write from an early age, and the sisters eventually turn their talent into published fiction, bringing their work to publishers under male pseudonyms while sharing the costs themselves.
André Téchiné directed the film, his first feature, working from a screenplay he wrote with Pascal Bonitzer and Jean Gruault. Isabelle Adjani plays Emily, Marie-France Pisier is Charlotte, Isabelle Huppert is Anne, and Pascal Greggory appears as Branwell, with Patrick Magee as Reverend Brontë and Hélène Surgère as Mrs. Robinson. The film was produced in France by Gaumont, France 3 Cinéma and Action Films, and runs 120 minutes.
The film came early in a directing career that continued with Rendez-vous, I Don't Kiss, Wild Reeds, Strayed, Being 17 and My New Friends. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 44 votes.
