Short description

Based on A. Galych's play "Matrosskaya Tishina", "Papa" tells a story of a Jewish father who dreamed of seeing his son perform on a stage in front of huge audiences, he dreamed of seeing him as the greatest violinist of his time. To achieve the goal he taught his son Dodik how to play the violin from the yearly age. When Dodik grew up he left the small town he and his father lived in to study in the Moscow Conservatory leaving his past behind. But one day he has to choose either to loose his father or everything he has achieved.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Interestingly, before filming, Vladimir Aronin spent a long time trying to discover what was hidden behind the mysterious term 'Krieger wagon.' He only managed to find a model of this wagon at the St. Petersburg Museum of Medicine. It turned out that this ingenious structure is a carriage with racks upon which movable stretchers for the severely wounded are attached.
  • The Katyushas and tanks that an attentive viewer may spot in the film are merely wooden frames covered with tarpaulin.
  • The station from which the trains depart from Tulchyn—the very station that so captivates the gaze of the residents of the provincial town—was filmed not in Kamianets-Podilskyi, but 50 kilometers away at the Ivane-Puste station. The fact is that this place had remained practically untouched since the war and was perfectly suited for filming the movie.
  • The main prop, or perhaps even the main 'heroine' of the film—David's violin—turns out to belong to Glinka, the actress Ksenia Lavrova-Glinka, who played David's Conservatory classmate Lyudmila Shutova. It emerged that the actress had graduated from music school in the violin class.
  • Any outside observer could have noticed that Egor Beroev's work on the role never stopped for a single minute. Every day before filming began, he could be seen in his car, listening to violin passages.
  • In literally one month, Egor Beroev learned to play Dmitri Shostakovich's 'Fifth Symphony,' although he had never held a violin before. After all, his character, David Schwartz, is a genius violinist. Therefore, the actor approached his task with full responsibility and studied daily with a violin teacher.
  • Egor loves to recall how he attended an 'extraordinary concert' by Vladimir Spivakov. One night, the maestro was recording music for 'Papa' in the empty hall of the Moscow Conservatory on a Stradivarius violin. Egor happened to be his only spectator. 'You cannot imagine the impression it made on me! The night, the silence, Spivakov, a Stradivarius, and Rachmaninoff's Vocalise...'
