Nacho Libre

Nacho Libre is about Ignacio, a cook at a poor Mexican monastery orphanage who was raised there as a child. The food he prepares is barely enough for the orphans in his care, and he nurses a long-held wish to become a wrestler, which the monastery does not permit. To raise money for the orphanage, he begins secretly competing in lucha libre under a mask as Nacho Libre, teaming with a skinny drifter named Esqueleto. Their early bouts go badly in sporting terms but earn money and win over crowds, and Nacho's ambition grows toward a match against the celebrated luchador Ramses. Complicating matters is Sister Encarnación, a nun newly arrived at the monastery, for whom he develops feelings, and the risk that his secret career will be discovered.

The film is directed by Jared Hess, following his 2004 debut Napoleon Dynamite and preceding Gentlemen Broncos, Masterminds, Ninety-Five Senses, Thelma the Unicorn and A Minecraft Movie. He wrote the screenplay with Mike White and Jerusha Hess, and Jack Black, who plays Nacho, produced alongside White and Julia Pistor. Ana de la Reguera appears as Sister Encarnación and Héctor Jiménez as Esqueleto, with Darius Rose, Moisés Arias and Carlos Maycotte among the credited cast of 53.

Released in June 2006, the film runs 92 minutes and cost about 35 million US dollars, returning roughly 99 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 102,000 votes; on TMDB it has 6.5 from about 1,925 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 from 165 reviews places it below both audience scores.
