Short description

Nacho Libre is loosely based on the story of Fray Tormenta ("Friar Storm"), aka Rev. Sergio Gutierrez Benitez, a real-life Mexican Catholic priest who had a 23-year career as a masked luchador. He competed in order to support the orphanage he directed.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the filming of some action scenes, inflatable dolls were used to play the roles of spectators.
  • According to Jack Black, his stunt double Tom had never been a stuntman before. The filmmakers couldn't find a stunt double of the appropriate size and Tom happened to catch their eye completely by chance.

  • One of the characters is named Chancho. From Spanish, it translates as "Pig." And the character Escuelto's name translates as "Skeleton."
