Babe: Pig in the City

Babe, the pig who won the sheepherding contest, is living contentedly on the Hoggett farm when an accident leaves Farmer Hoggett bedridden and unable to work. With the farm's finances in trouble and the bank threatening to take the property, Mrs. Hoggett takes Babe to the city, hoping to win prize money that can settle the debts. The journey goes wrong when the two are separated, leaving Babe lost among strangers in an unfamiliar metropolis.

George Miller directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Judy Morris and Mark Lamprell, and produced it with Doug Mitchell and Bill Miller. It followed Lorenzo's Oil and was the seventh of the thirteen films he has directed, with Happy Feet coming next. The cast mixes live action and voice work: Magda Szubanski as Mrs. Hoggett, James Cromwell as Farmer Hoggett, Elizabeth Daily as the voice of Babe, Danny Mann providing several animal voices, and Mickey Rooney as a hotel resident.

Made on a budget of about 90 million dollars, the film took roughly 69 million worldwide, so it did not recover its cost at the box office. Audiences rate it modestly, with 5.9/10 on IMDb from over 37,000 votes and 5.7/10 on TMDB from a much smaller sample. Critics were notably warmer, giving it 7/10 across 64 reviews, well above the audience scores.
