EverAfter

Set in sixteenth-century France, EverAfter follows Danielle de Barbarac, a bright and independent young woman who is left in the care of her stepmother, Baroness Rodmilla de Ghent, after her father's death. Reduced to a servant in her own home, Danielle refuses to accept her situation passively. When she meets Prince Henry, the heir to the French throne, their relationship develops outside the usual fairy-tale pattern: she is quick-witted, well-read, and prepared to help and protect him rather than wait to be rescued. Rodmilla, meanwhile, works to secure a match between Henry and one of her own daughters, placing her in direct conflict with Danielle's growing bond with the prince. The story retells the Cinderella tale without magic, with Leonardo da Vinci appearing as a supporting character who offers Danielle assistance.

Andy Tennant directed the film, his third feature after It Takes Two and Fools Rush In, and co-wrote the screenplay with Susannah Grant and Rick Parks. Drew Barrymore stars as Danielle, with Anjelica Huston as Rodmilla, Dougray Scott as Prince Henry, and Patrick Godfrey as Leonardo da Vinci. The film had a budget of 26 million USD and took 98 million USD worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost.
