Buffalo '66

Billy Brown leaves prison after five years and, rather than go home alone, abducts a teenage student named Layla on his way to visit his parents. He presents her to them as the wife he has invented in his letters, and the visit turns into an awkward attempt to win affection from parents who treat him with the same indifference they have shown since his youth. Layla, the one person who treats him decently, becomes his companion through the day.

Set in Buffalo, New York, in winter, the film is Vincent Gallo's directorial debut. He stars as Billy, with Christina Ricci as Layla, Ben Gazzara and Anjelica Huston as his parents, and Mickey Rourke and Rosanna Arquette in supporting roles. Gallo wrote the screenplay with Alison Bagnall and produced with Chris Hanley. He went on to direct The Brown Bunny in 2003, making Buffalo '66 the first of two features he has directed.

Made for about 2 million dollars, the film returned roughly the same amount worldwide, a modest commercial result for an independent release. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 1,091 votes, indicating a small but appreciative audience. It runs 110 minutes and mixes comedy, drama and romance.
