Short description
Celebrity is a 1998 American comedy-drama written and directed by Woody Allen. It follows Lee Simon, a journalist approaching forty who feels he has not made enough of his life. Divorced from his wife Robin, he writes travel pieces and interviews show-business figures while hoping to publish a novel or a screenplay that would raise his standing. His work draws him into Manhattan's wealthy and fashionable circles, where parties, openings and romances come one after another, and he begins to question what any of it is worth. Robin, meanwhile, is drawn into the world of celebrity by Tony, a television producer.
The film is the twenty-sixth of the forty-eight features Allen has directed, coming between Deconstructing Harry and Sweet and Lowdown. Kenneth Branagh plays Lee and Judy Davis plays Robin, with Hank Azaria, Leonardo DiCaprio, Melanie Griffith and Famke Janssen among the large credited cast of 135, supported by a crew of 90. Shot in black and white, it was made for a budget of 12 million USD and returned about 5 million USD worldwide. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from 520 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.5 out of 10 from 43 reviews, putting the two roughly in line with each other.
