Short description
Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny are determined to see an adult Canadian film starring their favourite television comedians, Terrance and Phillip, even though they are far too young to get in. They succeed, and come away repeating the crude language they have just heard. Their shocked parents and teachers are powerless as the new vocabulary spreads through South Park, and a campaign against the Canadian film quickly escalates into a full-scale confrontation between the United States and Canada. The two comedians end up facing execution, leaving the boys to try to put things right.
South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut was released in 1999 as a musical comedy adaptation of the animated series. Trey Parker directed, and wrote the screenplay with Matt Stone and Pam Brady; Parker and Stone also produced and voice most of the main characters, with Mary Kay Bergman, Isaac Hayes and several child performers filling out the cast. It was Parker's second feature as director, following Orgazmo a year earlier.
Made for about 21 million dollars, the film took in roughly 83 million worldwide, a strong return for an animated comedy based on a cable series. On IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 from some 224,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3 from just over 3,000. Its critics' rating of 7.7 from 98 reviews sits level with the IMDb figure and slightly above the TMDB one.
What's left behind the scenes
- The original title of the film was “South Park: All Hell Breaks Loose,” but the American Association of Film opposed the use of the word “hell” in the title. The title was changed to a more innocuous, yet ambiguous, one.
- The entire process of creating the film took about a year.
- No scenes were cut from the film.
- As in the series, aliens can often be noticed in the film in detail or in the background. Here they are depicted on most banknotes; Cartman also has a picture of an alien in his room, and an alien can be seen in the crowd at the end of the film.
- A portrait of actor Skeet Ulrich hangs above the beds of Satan and Saddam.
- The end credits state that Saddam Hussein voiced himself.
- Winona Ryder voiced Tzipporah 'Taffy' Walters.
- Before the episode where Kyle hides Ike in the attic, a squad of soldiers marches past his house, with Jesus marching among them.
