In 1930s Cornwall, two elderly sisters, Ursula and Janet Widdington, live a quiet life in their house by the sea. After a storm, they find a young man washed ashore and badly injured, and they take him in. He is Andrea, a Polish violinist from Krakow who went overboard from a ship bound for America. As the sisters care for him while he recovers, his presence stirs long-dormant feelings in both of them and unsettles the small coastal community, which is wary of strangers in the years before the war. The arrival of a young aristocratic woman, Olga, complicates the household further, while Andrea's musical gift gradually comes to light.
Ladies in Lavender is a British drama released in 2004 and directed by Charles Dance, who also wrote the screenplay. Judi Dench and Maggie Smith play Ursula and Janet, with Daniel Brühl as Andrea, Natascha McElhone as Olga, and supporting turns from Freddie Jones and Miriam Margolyes.
The film took about 20 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb, critics gave it a rating of 6.1 out of 10 from 92 reviews, while on TMDB it holds 6.4 out of 10 from 148 votes, placing the two measures close together.
