Dazed and Confused
Short description
Dazed and Confused takes place in a small Texas town in 1976, on the final day of the school year. The story follows a group of teenagers as they move through that day and into a long night of parties, hazing rituals and general aimlessness. At the centre is Pink, a football player who gets along with almost every crowd, from stoners to jocks to brainy kids. His coach wants him to sign a pledge promising not to use drugs, which puts him in an awkward position, since getting high is part of how he spends his time. Around him, incoming freshmen endure initiation at the hands of older students, and the evening's gathering in a park gradually grows out of control.
Richard Linklater wrote the screenplay, produced the film and directed it. It was his second feature, arriving after Slacker in 1990 and before Before Sunrise in 1995, within a career credited with twenty-two directing credits in chronological order. Jason London plays Pink, with Matthew McConaughey as Wooderson, Joey Lauren Adams as Simone, Rory Cochrane as Slater, Wiley Wiggins as Mitch and Adam Goldberg as Mike among a credited cast of sixty-seven.
Made for about seven million dollars, the film took in roughly eight million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6 from around 215,000 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7.3 from more than 2,300 votes. A critics' rating of 8.1 from sixty-nine reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- When Wiley Wiggins was cast as Mitch Kramer, he lied about his ability to play baseball, and specifically to pitch. Director, screenwriter, and producer Richard Linklater had to find a stunt double for the actor and film him from the back in the corresponding scenes.
- The people who served as the prototypes for Slater, Wooderson, and Floyd sued director Linklater in 2004, accusing him of invasion of privacy.
- The song Milla Jovovich plays on the guitar is an excerpt from a song on her 1994 album, "The Divine Comedy."
- At the very beginning of filming, Matthew McConaughey (who played David Wooderson) lost his father. Work on the film was suspended for a time while McConaughey attended the funeral.
- During filming, Sean Andrews (who played Kevin Pickford) and Jason London (who played Randall "Pink" Floyd) did not get along. At one point, they even got into a scuffle right on set, and director and screenwriter Richard Linklater had to break them up. As a result of this incident, it was decided to change the finale, which originally planned for Pickford's participation instead of Matthew McConaughey's David Wooderson. Additionally, this explains the almost complete lack of dialogue between the actors in these roles, even when they appear in the same scene.
- All actors, except for the minors, drank real beer. Jason London refused to drink on set.
- During filming, Ben Affleck (who played Fred O'Bannon) injured himself with a cricket bat, but he finished filming the scene.
- In October 1992, Milla Jovovich married Sean Andrews, whom she met on the set of the film. They divorced a month later.
- Pink's belt buckle is a real smoking pipe.
- Milla Jovovich (who played Michelle) appears on the posters, but almost all scenes with her character were cut from the film. Jovovich was so upset by this that she decided to take a break from her acting career and focus on music. Jovovich returned to acting when Luc Besson cast her in the lead role in the science fiction action film “The Fifth Element” (1997). In this film as well, her screen time was limited to two minutes.
- Matthew McConaughey's company, JKL Productions, is named after Woodson's motto, “Just Keep Livin’.”
