Tótem

Tótem takes place over a single day in a large family home in Mexico, where relatives gather to prepare a surprise birthday party. At the centre is seven-year-old Sol, the youngest of the grandchildren, who moves through the crowded house as aunts, cousins and pets swirl around her. The celebration is for her father, Tona, a painter whose illness keeps him resting in an upstairs room. Sol keeps asking to see him while the adults work, and as the day wears on she begins to grasp what this particular birthday means for the family. What the household is arranging is both a party and a farewell, and the film stays close to the child's view as that understanding settles in.

Lila Avilés directed and wrote the film, following her earlier feature La Camarista. Naíma Sentíes plays Sol, with Montserrat Marañon, Marisol Gasé, Saori Gurza, Mateo García Elizondo and Teresa Sánchez among the thirty credited cast. The production was a Danish, Mexican and French co-production, and the film runs 95 minutes.

On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 4,100 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from roughly 100 votes, indicating a modest but appreciative audience response.
