Short description
National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 is a 1993 action comedy directed by Gene Quintano, who wrote the screenplay with Don Holley. Set in Los Angeles, it follows Detective Jack Colt, a burned-out and rebellious officer, and Wes Luger, a veteran close to retirement who is assigned as his partner. The two are thrown together to investigate the murder of a police colleague who had come into possession of a formula for turning cocaine into cookies. The trail leads toward a drug dealer known as General Mortars, who plans to spread the narcotics through a nationwide cookie drive.
The film is a broad parody of the buddy-cop genre and of action cinema of its era, with Emilio Estevez and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead roles. Jon Lovitz, Tim Curry, Kathy Ireland and Frank McRae appear among the cast. Suzanne Todd and David Willis produced it for 3 Arts Entertainment and New Line Cinema, with a budget of 13 million dollars and a worldwide gross of about 28 million.
Audience response on TMDB stands at 6.1 out of 10 from 843 votes. Critics were far less enthusiastic, giving the film 3.8 out of 10 across 34 reviews. Released in February 1993, it runs 84 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- A decision to make a sequel was made almost immediately. A slogan was even developed: “Oh come ON, you knew it was coming!” but due to poor box office results, the idea of creating a sequel had to be abandoned.
- The film features the songs “You Really Got Me” (sung by the character of Denis Liri), “We Can Work It Out”, “I’m Popeye The Sailorman”, “Bohemian Rhapsody” (from the repertoire of Queen), and “Love Kills” (from the repertoire of Freddie Mercury).
- Danny Glover was offered the role of Wes Luger, but he declined. Samuel L. Jackson was then cast as the sergeant.
- The film came about as a result of David Rasche and Alan Spencer turning down filming for the 3rd season of the series 'The Hammer'.
