Short description

Infamous is a crime drama about Truman Capote, the writer whose research into the 1959 murder of a Kansas farming family drew him into an unusual and complicated bond with the two convicted killers, Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. What began as an assignment for a magazine article grew into years of reporting, and the relationships he formed along the way fed into the book he was writing. He travels to rural Kansas with his friend Harper Lee, and the distance between Manhattan literary society and small-town life shapes much of the story.

Douglas McGrath wrote and directed the film, his fourth feature after Emma, Company Man and Nicholas Nickleby. Toby Jones plays Capote, with Sandra Bullock as Harper Lee, Daniel Craig as Perry Smith, Jeff Daniels as Alvin Dewey, Peter Bogdanovich as Bennett Cerf and Hope Davis as Slim Keith. The production had a budget of about 13 million dollars and took roughly 3 million dollars worldwide, so it did not recover its costs at the box office. On IMDb it holds a 7/10 from around 19,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5/10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.9/10 from 154 reviews places it close to the audience score on IMDb.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Truman Capote (1924-1984) did not see the bloodstained mattresses when he visited the Clutter home. Friends of Herb Clutter, who were cleaning the house, burned the mattresses, bedspreads, sofa, and other items stained with blood before Capote arrived, which happened closer to the end of the week, after the Clutters' funeral.
  • At the beginning of the film, Harper Lee (1926-2016) and Truman Capote order drinks in a restaurant in Kansas. At the time the film takes place, alcohol was prohibited in Kansas, and it only became possible to buy it in a restaurant after a change in state law, which occurred only in the mid-1980s.
