Assassins
Short description
Assassins centres on Robert Rath, a veteran contract killer who has decided to leave his profession behind after one final assignment. Before he can carry it out, a younger, more impulsive gunman named Miguel Bain takes the job from him, and Rath finds himself facing a rival who is determined to replace him. His situation grows more complicated when he joins forces with Electra, a surveillance and information specialist who was meant to be his target, while Bain continues to pursue them both.
Richard Donner directed the film, which sits in the middle of a run of eighteen features in his directing career, following Maverick and preceding Conspiracy Theory. Sylvester Stallone plays Rath, Antonio Banderas plays Bain and Julianne Moore plays Electra, with Anatoli Davydov, Muse Watson and Steve Kahan among the credited cast. The screenplay was written by Brian Helgeland along with Lilly and Lana Wachowski, and Joel Silver was among the producers. The film runs 132 minutes and was a large production, with a budget of 50 million US dollars and a worldwide box office of 30 million.
On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from around 1,780 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10 from 49 reviews places professional assessment considerably lower than the audience score on TMDB.
What's left behind the scenes
- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sean Connery, and Michael Douglas all auditioned for the role of Robert Ret, played by Stallone.
- Initially, director David Anspaugh did not want to film this movie, believing that little of value could be made with such a budget. He was persuaded to reconsider by his friend and screenwriter Angelo Pizzo, who said the budget would be increased, which in reality did not happen.
- During the production of the film, Brian Helgeland was asked to make changes to the script. This did not sit well with the other screenwriters – Lilly and Lana Wachowski, who even asked that their names not be mentioned in connection with the film at all and be removed from the credits, but the Writers Guild of America forbade this.
- According to director Richard Donner (1930-2021), the film would have only benefited from swapping Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas’ roles.
- Initially, Mel Gibson showed interest in filming this movie. He even told his friend Richard Donner that he really liked the script. But then Gibson became busy with the project 'Braveheart' (1995), where he was both director and actor, and Donner took over 'Assassins' himself.
