Short description

Iris cares for her younger brother, who is seriously ill, and struggles to keep them both afloat after their father's death. An apparently charitable aristocrat named Shepard Lambrick offers to help, then invites her to an exclusive dinner party at his home. Other guests arrive with their own urgent reasons for wanting the prize money on offer. What begins as a civilized gathering becomes a contest called Would You Rather, in which those taking part must choose between two unpleasant options, and the choices grow steadily more dangerous.

David Guy Levy directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Steffen Schlachtenhaufen; his second film, The Mandela Effect, followed several years later. Brittany Snow plays Iris, with Jeffrey Combs as Lambrick, supported by Jonny Coyne, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Enver Gjokaj and Sasha Grey. The independent American production runs ninety-three minutes.

On IMDb, the film holds 5.7 out of 10 from around 50,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from roughly a thousand votes. A critics' rating of 5.3 out of 10 from twenty-three reviews places critical opinion slightly below the audience scores. The wide gap in vote numbers between the two audience platforms reflects how the title has circulated among genre viewers rather than in general release.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the scene where the characters are having dinner, Shepherd Lambric places his fork on the plate. In subsequent scenes, the fork either disappears or reappears. The direction of the tines also changes – sometimes they point upwards, sometimes downwards.
  • At the beginning of the film, in the scene where Iris is talking to her brother, her hair is clearly seen falling freely on her face, but after a camera change, her hair is already tucked behind her ears.
  • The character of Travis is credited twice in the credits. Once as being played by Enver Gjokaj, and the other as Charlie Hofheimer. Gjokaj played the role of Lucas, but his character's name is not listed in the credits.
  • In the scene where the characters are fitted with bandages through which current is supposed to pass, the metal discs protruding from under the strap of one of the characters alternately stick downwards, towards the face, and upwards, towards the hair.
