Jack Frost is a family fantasy about a musician who spends most of his life on tour and has little time for his son Charlie, despite the affection between them. When Jack dies in a car crash on an icy road, he is given an unexpected chance to return. A year later, during the Christmas season, Charlie builds a snowman that takes on his father's spirit, giving Jack one more opportunity to make things right with his boy before he disappears again.
The film was directed by Troy Miller, the first of the features he directed. Jonathan Roberts, Mark Steven Johnson and Steve Bloom wrote the screenplay, and Mark Canton and Irving Azoff produced. Michael Keaton plays Jack, Kelly Preston is his wife Gabby, and Joseph Cross is Charlie, with Mark Addy, Andrew Lawrence and Eli Marienthal in supporting roles.
Released in November 1998, the film runs 101 minutes and combines comedy, drama, family and fantasy. Against a budget of about 27 million dollars, it took in roughly 35 million worldwide. Audience response has been modest: on IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from more than 39,000 votes, and on TMDB 6 out of 10 from a smaller base of voters. A critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 from 58 reviews places it below those audience scores, though still in similar territory.
