Cabrini

Cabrini follows Francesca Cabrini, an Italian nun and immigrant who arrives in New York City in 1889 with nothing. Instead of opportunity, she finds disease, crime and destitute children, and an Italian immigrant community treated with hostility and intolerance. With a small group of sisters beside her, she sets out to persuade the city's unfriendly mayor to provide housing and medical care for the people nobody else will help. Her poor health and halting English do not stop her from using her business sense to build something far larger than anyone expected: an orphanage, a hospital and a network of institutions serving the poor.

Alejandro Gómez Monteverde directed the film, his third feature after Little Boy (2015) and Sound of Freedom (2023), from a screenplay by Rod Barr. Cristiana Dell'Anna plays Cabrini, with David Morse, Giancarlo Giannini, John Lithgow, Romana Maggiora Vergano and Federico Ielapi in supporting roles. The production, mounted by Santa Fe Films and Angel Studios among others, carried a budget of 50 million dollars and returned 21 million dollars worldwide, a shortfall against its cost.

Audiences have responded more warmly than that figure might suggest. On IMDb the film holds 7.3 out of 10 across roughly 9,900 votes, and on TMDB 7.7 out of 10 from about 174 votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 90 reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than sharply apart from them.
