Short description
Major League: Back to the Minors follows Gus Cantrell, a veteran minor league pitcher who is considering retirement when Roger Dorn, now the owner of the Minnesota Twins, offers him a job as manager of the Buzz, a struggling farm team in South Carolina. Gus takes over a roster of unpolished prospects and aging players, and his task is to turn the group into a real team. Dorn, however, has another plan in mind: he wants to stage a publicity match between his major league club and its minor league affiliate.
The film is the third entry in the Major League series, released in 1998 and written and directed by John Warren, with James G. Robinson producing for Morgan Creek. Scott Bakula leads the cast as Gus Cantrell, joined by Corbin Bernsen, who returns as Roger Dorn, and Dennis Haysbert as Pedro Cerrano. Takaaki Ishibashi, Jensen Daggett and Eric Bruskotter also appear among a credited cast of 107, with 98 crew members credited. The production had a budget of 18 million dollars and took in about 4 million dollars worldwide, a return well below its cost.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 4.7 out of 10 from around 8,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5 out of 10 from 122 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.6 out of 10 from 18 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores, suggesting that neither critics nor viewers regarded this later installment as matching the earlier films in the series.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot in Southern California in early October 1997, when the weather was unusually cold. While viewers might believe the games were taking place on hot summer nights, the temperature outside was around zero degrees Celsius.
- During the second game between the Bees and the Bulls, the scoreboard is shown displaying a score of 0-1 in the eighth inning. However, the very scoring play made by player Lance Pierre has not yet been shown in the film. It is only in the following shots that we see how that point was scored, with the same scoreboard displayed.
- During the first game between the Bees and the Bulls, after one of the scoring plays, the Bees' bench is shown, and among their players, for some reason, is a player from the opposing team.
