Beyond the Blue Border

Set in East Germany during August 1989, this historical drama follows Hanna and Andreas, two young people targeted by the secret police. Forced to abandon their career aspirations and educational goals due to state repression and mistrust, they see escape as their only path to a self-determined life. The pair attempts a perilous fifty-kilometer swim across the Baltic Sea toward freedom, relying on a thin rope tied to their wrists to keep them together during the crossing.

The film was directed and written by Sarah Neumann. It features a cast including Lena Urzendowsky as Hanna Klein and Willi Geitmann as Andreas Kuschwitz, supported by Jannis Veihelmann, Winnie Böwe, Ronny Miersch, and Stefan Mocker. A total of 20 actors are credited in the production. The project was a German production involving several companies, including ARTE, SWR, Wood Water Films, and the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.
