Short description

Robert Clayton Dean is a labor lawyer in Washington, D.C. with a wife and young son, until a videotape showing the murder of a congressman is slipped into his hands without his knowledge. The recording implicates a senior figure at the National Security Agency who arranged the killing to protect surveillance powers. Targeted by the agency, Dean is framed for the murder and finds his job, his reputation and his family life stripped away as his personal data vanishes from official records. With help from Brill, a surveillance expert who operates in the shadows, he tries to stay ahead of his pursuers and clear his name.

Tony Scott directed the film, the tenth of the sixteen features he made, following The Fan and preceding Spy Game. David Marconi wrote the screenplay, and Jerry Bruckheimer produced. Will Smith plays Dean, with Gene Hackman as Brill, Jon Voight as Reynolds, Regina King as Carla Dean, Loren Dean as Hicks and Jake Busey as Krug. The credited cast runs to 102 names, with 264 crew members credited.

Released on November 20, 1998, the film runs 132 minutes and cost about 90 million dollars to make, returning roughly 251 million dollars worldwide. Audience scores are close to the critics' 6.9/10 from 82 reviews, with a 7.3/10 on IMDb from 274,000 votes and a 7.1/10 on TMDB from 4,430 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Gene Hackman refused the role in this film six times, but finally agreed after a phone call with director Tony Scott (1944-2012). After working with Roland Emmerich on "Independence Day" (1996), he agreed to work with Scott, and Will Smith, who wanted to work with Hackman.
  • The National Security Agency, or NSA, refused to assist the filmmakers. Aerial shots of the NSA headquarters at Fort Meade in Maryland had to be taken from a considerable distance in open airspace.
  • The car chase through the storm drain was filmed in a large ventilation tunnel in Baltimore, Maryland. Access was only possible through an administrative building via stairs and a descending elevator, so the cars used in the scene were initially disassembled into several parts, lowered three floors, and then reassembled and repainted. Once filming was complete, the cars were disassembled again and lifted back up.
  • Filming took place from November 5, 1997, to April 6, 1998.
  • The film's technical advisor, Larry Cox, once worked at the NSA.
  • Initially, Tom Cruise was considered for a role in the film, but he had to decline as he was still working with Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) on the thriller 'Eyes Wide Shut' (1999).
  • When Gene Hackman's character leads Will Smith's character to the 'office' located in a warehouse, you can notice that it is a homemade Faraday cage, i.e., an enclosure used to block electromagnetic fields.
