Kevin Dillon is a small, sharp-witted boy with an active imagination who uses crutches because of a degenerative physical condition. Maxwell Kane is a much larger thirteen-year-old who struggles at school, lacks confidence and fits no social mould. When Kevin and his mother move into the house next to the one where Max lives with his grandparents, the two boys form a friendship and discover how well they complement each other. Max carries Kevin on his shoulders, and together they take on the roles of a knight and his mount, setting out to right wrongs in their town.
Peter Chelsom directed the film, which followed his earlier features Hear My Song and Funny Bones, and it was written by Charles Leavitt. Elden Henson plays Max and Kieran Culkin plays Kevin, with Sharon Stone as Kevin's mother, Gena Rowlands and Harry Dean Stanton as Max's grandparents, and Meat Loaf as Iggy.
The film was released in 1998 and runs 100 minutes. Its worldwide box office came to about 3 million dollars, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 6.8/10 from 40 reviews, while on TMDB it has a rating of 7.2/10 from 302 votes, so audiences rate it somewhat more favourably than critics do.
